Home Projects
We’ve been taking up more projects around our house. About a year and a half ago one of our three kitchen drawers broke. We decided to fix it by completely renovating our kitchen. We invited Ikea’s kitchen planner into our house and got an estimate. Since we were going to fix the drawer by renovating our entire kitchen, we figured we might as well add some of the modern-day-conveniences to our less-than-modern kitchen. That would include a garbage disposal, a dishwasher, and a microwave above the stove. Yeah, we have to wash our own dishes, exist without a garbage disposal and microwave at counter level. So unfair. Because our kitchen is so old, the house that it came with is also old. How that effects our kitchen remodel is that there is not enough electric outlet space for a garbage disposal and/or a dishwasher in my new dream kitchen. (Well as much of a dream that’s possible in an 8×8 kitchen.) A new electric outlet will solve that problem and increase the price a tad bit more. But, that’s ok, because we’d be able to get an organizer’s dream cabinet solution that would magically make all my dishes, pots, pans, silverware and other kitchen appliances fit - yay!
One day late last month I was looking at that broken drawer, thinking about the economy, thinking about the kitchen’s upcoming transformation and wondered if there might be a more financially responsible way to fix a drawer than to replace the entire kitchen. Ah! Let’s just reattach the broken part with a nail and some nail glue. One hour, five dollars, and a trip to Home Depot later - problem fixed. A year and a half after it broke, it was working again.
We decided to postpone our kitchen upgrade. Not completely, though. We are getting new counters. The very great thing about having a kitchen with only three drawers is that there only needs to be enough counters space to cover three drawers. The largest part of our counter currently holds an inlaid glass cutting board. It’s been there since the kitchen was built and I’m sure enough food particles have made their way into and under this thing that I can’t even write about it right now or I’m going to get sick. It’s also ugly. I try to cover it up by putting a larger cutting board over it, but it’s not the ideal solution. Since we don’t have much counterspace, we figure we can probably buy the lamborghini of countertops, sleek and cool, for under $200. Not too bad.
All this backstory is just to say that we also decided to utilize our wall space to address the lack of cabinet space. We saw this on Apartment Therapy a couple of weeks ago and decided it would be a great addition to our kitchen:

We’re doing it in gray and can’t wait till it’s done. I’ll have to show you pics.

I LOVE the kitchen look=esp. the pots and pans on the pegboard-that’s ingenious! Looks great there like that!
This is so funny. Why do we never go for the simple easy fix in the first place? ha ha! Congrats on the counter tops!
That’s a fun photo–please do post more when you’re done with the project, too!
