The glamour of it all
“Travel is glamorous only in retrospect.” - Paul Theroux
On a recent trip to Italy, I sat at the Bologna train station waiting for my train to Florence. The reality of the moment was that I was frustrated. The dollar was so weak, I couldn’t enjoy Bologna as much as I hoped and I wasn’t looking forward to the train ride home. The person sitting next to me, waiting for a train to Venice or something, had a dog with them and the dog peed forming a puddle right on the concrete ground. This added to my frustration and I just wanted to be in Florence at my hotel. It was such a non-glamourous moment of our trip, yet in retrospect… wow. A dog could pee next to my leg almost anywhere, at least I was about to board the train to go through Tuscany and feast on pasta once I got back to Florence.
What are some of your only-in-retrospect glamour moments?

that’s funny
I look back fondly on my year as an exchange student in France but there were definitely moments when I was ready to scream. Did you know that it was possible to be robbed in 2 Europeans countries at the same time? A friend and I got back to our hotel in Brussels only to find a drunken man sitting on the bed watching tv and eating the Godiva chocolates that I’d bought as an xmas present for my family. The same night, someone was caught by the police in our apartment complex breaking into my mailbox trying to steal a package. But if I ignore those 2 incidents (and the 3 times I caught someone trying to pickpocket me) I can say that I really, really enjoyed Europe.
