What Can I Bring on a Plane?

This is a very popular question around the holidays. Before you go on your trip, go to the TSA website and check to make sure the item isn’t prohibited. If you are still unsure, check specific items on the website keeping in mind that the airline could have even more strict requirements. So call them. If the item seems too questionable, either check it or don’t bring it. At any moment an official can tell you it’s not allowable and it’s not really worth arguing over it or throwing away something you own.

With all that in mind, here’s the latest information I pulled off of the TSA website concerning items I hear most of the crafty types ask about:

  • Knitting needles ARE permitted, but some officials may still consider them a security risk and remove them if they feel so inclined. The TSA suggests the best ways to avoid it are to carry needles less than 31 inches, use bamboo or plastic needles, have a S.A.S.E. in case you have to mail it back, and put any cutting equipment in checked luggage.
  • Scissors are permitted in carry-on if they are under 4 inches.
  • Snowglobes are not allowed on carry-on.

Even though I’m giving you these tips, I still strongly urge that you double check with the TSA and airline before bringing items on the plane. Remember, you have to go through two check points, so that’s why you want to check with both. It’s best not to ask friends or family (unless they work for the TSA) what’s acceptable because different conditions could have made their situation different from yours. I really like the TSA’s suggestion of bringing an S.A.S.E. if you are really worried that something may not be able to be checked in. Finally, if the TSA or airline person seems to be giving you a hard time, just be understanding. They are doing it for your safety and because it’s their job.
